5 Tips for Choosing the Artwork in Your Home

It can be a daunting task for some. How do you choose the perfect pieces of artwork to complete your new home?

Should it be colourful, black and white, large or small? Should it be abstract or clean? How much should you spend?

Here's a few things to keep in mind when you start your search for the perfect piece(s):

  1. Like what you like - It's easy to get caught up in trends and end up purchasing artwork that you don't particularly love. This will often have you kicking yourself 12 months later, realising that bought something that everyone now has or is no longer 'cool'. Our advice - figure out what you actually like. Your home should be a space that you enjoy being in. The pieces that you select should be an expression of what you love. When you look at them each day they should bring you a sense of happiness.

  2. Be patient - Getting to know what you like can take time. Your preferences might sway from time to time, but try to take note of things that catch your eye consistently. You'll quickly start to realise patterns in the styles that you're drawn to. Then you can begin looking for items that match the criteria.

  3. Don't be afraid of blank walls - buying a piece of art purely because you have a blank wall to fill is a recipe for mediocrity or disaster. You'll end up with something that doesn't bring you joy and needs replacing. Every time you look at that blank wall, think about the possibilities and excitement you'll feel when you finally find the right piece. And when you do hang that perfect print, painting or photograph, every time you look at it you'll be reminded of the patience and effort that went into it - making you appreciate it even more.

  4. Follow and get to know some artists - although Social Media is strongly based on trends, it can also be a goldmine for finding unique artists and their pieces. Our tip - don't wait for things to come to you. Once you've figured out some styles that you like, try searching for them on Instagram and Pinterest. There's so many great artists and creatives in the world that you're bound to come across someone that you like.

  5. When you decide, decide - When you find a piece that you like - own it! It's great to discuss its suitability with your partner or family, but don't seek out too many opinions. Remember, artwork is a very personal and subjective thing. What you like won't necessarily be what your mother-in-law likes.

It’s been said that "finding art that you love is a lot like finding your perfect-partner". You can search as hard as you want, but ultimately it will find you when the time is right.
You'll probably come across it in the most unlikely of situations, meaning it will have a great story behind it when you do.

Good luck.
